Former Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley has suggested that Cole Palmer may have been better off joining Tottenham Hotspur.

Cole Palmer has joined Chelsea but one pundit believes signing for Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United would have been better.

That’s the view of pundit Phil Bardsley, who was speaking to Sky Sports on transfer deadline day (01/09, 10am).

The former Manchester United defender was on punditry duty alongside Darren Moore as the final day of the window arrived.

Bardsley was asked about Cole Palmer as he swapped Manchester City for Chelsea in a huge deal worth around £42.5million.

Some are surprised that City would sell to Chelsea whilst others think Palmer is a strange signing for the Blues when they signed Noni Madueke just months ago.

Bardsley suggested that leaving City for Chelsea in search of first-team football was a strange decision given the competition at Stamford Bridge.

The ex-Sunderland man feels that Palmer may actually have been better off joining Tottenham Hotspur or West Ham United, believing they would have been better for his playing ambitions.

“You are talking about regular football that Palmer wants. If you are going to go to Chelsea, then it’s probably highly unlikely that, at this stage, he is going to play ahead of Sterling and Nkunku on the left,” said Bardsley. “I think maybe a West Ham or a Spurs might have suited him at this stage of his career if he wanted to play consistent football. But it is what it is. It’s his choice and it’s Manchester City’s choice as well,” he added.

Cole Palmer made an impact on his Chelsea debut

Chelsea have broken the £1billion barrier in terms of spending in the Todd Boehly era but they’re still way off where they need to be under Mauricio Pochettino.

Saturday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest summed that up with Chelsea again drawing a blank in a 1-0 loss.

Palmer didn’t start the game but he did come on and looked bright, recording one key pass and three successful dribbles.

Palmer will surely be looking to push for starts after the international break with Chelsea in need of a creative spark.

We can understand Bardsley’s suggestions and Palmer was certainly on West Ham’s radar before they signed Mohammed Kudus.

Tottenham is maybe a little less likely as they already have Dejan Kulusevski and even he is yet to prove that he is an ideal fit for Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian wants more speed in his attack and that’s why Spurs have invested in Brennan Johnson rather than somebody like Palmer.
