Former Ibrox striker Kris Boyd has written in The Scottish Sun that a lot of Rangers fans would want Celtic to progress to the Scottish Cup final.
Boyd, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Celtic playing in the final of the Scottish Cup would mean that they would have to play another game in an already congested fixture list, and that could work in favour of Rangers.
Neil Lennon’s side will take on Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
The winners of the game will face either Heart of Midlothian or Hibernian in the final.
Rangers are also in action on Sunday but in the Scottish Premiership where they will take on Kilmarnock away from home.
Steven Gerrard’s side are at the top of the league table at the moment with 32 points from 12 matches.
The Gers are six points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic, who have played 11 matches.
Boyd wrote in The Scottish Sun: “In a strange way, I think a lot of the club’s fans wouldn’t mind Celtic winning at Hampden. It would mean another game in an already-crammed fixture list for Neil Lennon’s men and force them to rearrange yet another league match.
“There would also be the potential for Rangers to be 12 points clear ahead of the next Old Firm clash at Ibrox. Yes, Celtic would have games in hand but playing catch-up is never easy and I know what position I would rather be in.”
Rangers should concentre on themselves
Celtic have won the Scottish Premiership title for the past nine seasons and can handle fixture congestion.
The Hoops reaching the Scottish Cup final and potentially winning it would enhance their confidence.
Another game, especially a final, is really not much for the Hoops. Rangers should concentre on their own games for now and maintain their good form.
