Manchester United have been urged to sell Cristiano Ronaldo due to a perceived imbalance of their attack.

That’s according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who has claimed that it was a mistake by Manchester United to re-sign the iconic goalscorer last summer.

Ronaldo has netted 15 goals across all competitions following a £20 million return to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer.

But the 37-year-old scored his first of the calendar year only this week in a victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

And Carragher believes that the Red Devils are a much stronger outfit overall without the talismanic Portugal international, pointing to last season’s goalscoring statistics as a reference.

He wrote in The Telegraph: “United made a mistake re-signing Ronaldo last summer. It will be a bigger one keeping him next season. United scored 121 in all competitions in 2020-21, their highest tally for 14 years, That is because they were a more balanced, unified team than now.”

Carragher might have a point.

Despite having a phenomenal goalscorer in the ranks, Manchester United aren’t finding the net tremendously collectively.

Even West Ham United have scored more goals [44] than Ralf Rangnick’s outfit, who have 40 in the Premier League – 21 less than Liverpool and Manchester City, the teams who Ronaldo was supposed to help United rival this season.

Nobody can deny that Ronaldo will be remembered as perhaps the world’s finest footballer but at 37, and with United only averaging 1.6 goals per Premier League outing this season with him in the side, the former Liverpool defender just might be right in suggesting that it hasn’t worked well for all parties.
