Stephen Warnock has shared that Liverpool and Tottenham duo, Ibrahima Konate and Heung-Min Son, would be ‘neck and neck’ in a race, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports.

The former left-back added that if he had to pick, then Tottenham’s flying forward would ‘pip’ the Liverpool summer signing in a race.

On Sunday, Son and Konate battled one another as Spurs recorded a 2-2 draw against the Premier League title contenders.

On a number of occasions, Antonio Conte’s men were hurting the Reds on the counter, as they constantly hurt the space their fullbacks were leaving in behind their defence.

On one occasion, Konate, inside Tottenham’s half, lost Son when he turned the Liverpool man on the half-turn, before going forward, linking up with Harry Kane and then missing a guilt-edge chance to score.

Warnock touched upon that moment and the duo being in a foot race with one another.

“We talk about desire and counter-attacking football,” said Warnock. “Son (inside his own half) wants to get in front of Konate.

“Konate is thinking ‘I will just recover back into my position (on the halfway line)’. But what you have to do is, you have to say ‘that’s my man. I don’t let him go’.

“Now, if you were to say to Konate and Son in a race, who do you think would win? I think it would be neck and neck.

“I think both players are quick. Son might just pip him. And when this unfolds (Spurs counter), he (Son) has lost Konate already.”

Life at Liverpool has started in a pretty strong fashion for Konate, who was Jurgen Klopp’s only senior signing in the summer, but the weekend game was him being brought down to earth.

Spurs continually hurt Liverpool’s backline by playing on the shoulders of their opponents and taking advantage of the spaces they were leaving behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

All in all, both teams aren’t going to be involved in such action-packed games on that many occasions this season and they will be hoping for more straightforward wins in the League Cup tonight.

Spurs host London rivals West Ham, whilst Liverpool take on their former boss, Brendan Rodgers, and Leicester City.
