Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports, during their coverage of England’s match against Belgium, that Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s progress stopped Carlo Ancelotti making a signing this summer.
Calvert-Lewin has started the season in flying form for Everton, with his performance earning him his chance on the international stage.
And while many people have discussed Everton’s need for a new number nine, Redknapp believes that Calvert-Lewin’s start to the campaign has actually put Carlo Ancelotti off signing a new striker.
“He’s very talented,” Redknapp said. “I think it shows you how important confidence is in football. We all talk about what he’s doing differently, but he’s probably not doing that many things differently.
“Things are going in for him because he’s got the belief. He’s arrived at this level now where he feels that after scoring against Wales, that he can do this.
“Everton have believed in him. The manager has worked with some of the best strikers in world football, well, he’s saying to him, ‘You’re my man’.
“Every week he knows he’s going to be starting. A lot of people are talking about when Everton are going to get a number nine – he is their number nine. He’s doing so well, and he deserves everything he gets.”
Ever since Everton lost Romelu Lukaku there has been a discussion about the Toffees’ need to replace him.
However, in Calvert-Lewin they seem to have finally found a goalscorer.
The powerful forward has needed patience, but he now seems to have found his shooting boots, and his form for the Toffees this year has been nothing short of remarkable.
Calvert-Lewin already has nine goals in just six Everton appearances this term, and currently leads the way in the Premier League’s top scoring charts.
