Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Phil Foden would not get into the Liverpool or the Chelsea team.

The former Arsenal star, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, believes that Foden is not guaranteed a place in the England squad for the European Championship next summer.

Merson thinks that if the 20-year-old midfielder was at Liverpool, then he would not get into the starting lineup.

The Englishman wrote in The Daily Star: “I think Foden has a long way to go to get to the Euros. If he was at Liverpool, I don’t think he would be starting for them. Their midfield three is so efficient and very underrated. They’re a machine and they make everything else tick.

“And Liverpool’s front three is set, plus they have Diogo Jota now as well. To be honest, I don’t think Foden even gets into the Chelsea team right now.”

Harsh?

Foden is not a regular in the City team, and while he would not play week in and week out for Liverpool, one should not forget that he is only 20 years of age.

The England international is only just starting his career and has played just three matches for the Three Lions.

Of course, the midfielder is not guaranteed a place in the Three Lions’ squad for the European Championship, but he is surely in contention.

If Foden does well for City in the coming weeks and months and impresses for England in March, then he could be in Gareth Southgate’s squad next summer.

According to WhoScored, Foden has made four starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for City so far this season, scoring two goals in the process, and has provided one assist in three Champions League games.
