Kris Boyd has raved about Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield in The Scottish Sun.

The former Rangers striker, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has been impressed by Arfield’s goalscoring prowess of late.

Boyd has said that the 32-year-old midfielder is an invaluable player for Rangers, and has added that the Canada international knows that he is under pressure to perform due to competition for places.

Boyd wrote about Arfield in The Scottish Sun: “Gerrard has excellent footballers in midfield in the likes of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara. He has a fine ball-carrier in Joe Aribo. But Arfield knows his ability to get into scoring areas — and take the chances — is invaluable to Rangers right now.

“Morelos is going through a spell where he’s slashing and smashing at things. Roofe has tended to specialise in wonder goals so far. That’s why I say Arfield is the second-best finisher around at the moment.

“It’s amazing to think he wasn’t always in Gerrard’s first team at the start of the season. But he’s worked so hard to get in and now he’s working just as hard to stay in. With Aribo and Bongani Zungu on the bench against Liege — and Jack in the stand injured — he knows there is genuine competition for places. He realises that he can’t allow his standards to drop or he could be back out of the team.”

Important player for Rangers

Arfield has established himself as an important player for Rangers and has been among the goals lately.

The 32-year-old scored for Steven Gerrard’s side in their 3-2 win against Standard Liege at Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

According to WhoScored, the Canada international midfielder has made eight starts and seven substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers so far this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists in the process.

The midfielder has also scored two goals in five Europa League matches and has found the back of the net twice in two Scottish Cup games for the Gers, according to WhoScored.
