Paul Merson said on Sky Sports News (2:45pm, October 5, 2020) that Chelsea midfielder Jorginho would have a great signing for Arsenal.

The former Arsenal star – who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports – raved about the Italy international, and believes that the midfielder would have made the Gunners better in the middle of the park.

According to ESPN, the Gunners wanted to sign the 28-year-old Italy international midfielder from London and Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Merson said about Jorginho and Arsenal: “It would have been a great signing for Arsenal, with the way we play out from the back, he is so comfortable and calm on the ball.

“I am a big fan of Jorginho. He would have been a great signing for Arsenal and a massive loss for Chelsea.”

Always an unlikely transfer

True, there have been transfer dealings between Chelsea and Arsenal in recent years – David Luiz and Olivier Giroud instantly come to mind – but it was always unlikely that Jorginho would move from the Blues to the Gunners this summer.

The former Napoli star is a very good player and remains an important figure in manager Frank Lampard’s side.

Given that Chelsea and Arsenal are direct rivals for the Champions League places in the Premier League table this season, manager Lampard was unlikely to make the Gunners stronger by selling them Jorginho.
