Jamie Redknapp told Super Sunday on Sky Sports that Dele Alli’s ‘not doing enough’ in training after Jose Mourinho opted against starting him for Tottenham’s win against Burnley.

The 24-year-old, who starred in the Europa League on Thursday night, had to contend with 25 or so minutes off the bench yesterday.

Alli has had an up and down time under Mourinho’s stewardship, but it’s fair to say that of late, the Alli of old is coming to the fore.

Redknapp touched upon Mourinho’s decision to bench Alli on Sunday and how people need to remember the magic he has in his game.

“We do forget, we forget sometimes how good players are when they have a little bit of time off,” said Redknapp. “But this is a player, the rate of goals he scored is just out of this world.

“But things haven’t worked out since Jose’s come to the club. I don’t believe a player of this quality cannot even be getting on the bench sometimes. It just doesn’t make any sense.

“If you think about how they are struggling, at the moment. It would be great to introduce someone like him.

“But there has to be two reasons for that, 1), he’s not doing enough in training. Not showing the manager enough appetite or desire. Secondly, there is some kind of problem between him and the manager.”

Many months ago, Tanguy Ndombele was being questioned by Mourinho – he is now one of Tottenham’s best players.

Then the likes of Bale and Alli have been questioned – the former is now showing signs of his old self.

It will only be a matter of time before Alli is producing the goods week in and week out for Spurs, and doing it during these final few months of the season, would be perfect timing.
