Freddie Ljungberg has lauded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a ‘top, top player’ and told Sky Sports on Super Sunday that he has ‘super strengths’ which mean opponents ‘cannot really compete’.
The former Arsenal coach was responding to Jamie Redknapp, who admitted that his previous comments about Aubameyang losing his ‘superpowers’ were ‘disrespectful’.
Whilst Aubameyang hasn’t hit the heights of last season, in terms of goals scored, Arsenal still look towards him to put the ball into the back of the net and feed them points.
Ljungberg would have worked with Aubameyang closely during his time as Arsenal’s first-team coach and he shared that leaving him one v one with a right-back will spell nothing but trouble for the opposition.
“I think he’s a top, top player,” said Ljungberg. “That’s where, I am sorry, I disagree with you guys (Redknapp) on his level.
“I have an opinion that if you have a great player then he will always stay a great player. There can be circumstances and changes. How the opponent play. How you play. Tactics. This and that.
“But the quality doesn’t disappear. And if you look at Auba, if you let him go in behind or if you let him go one v one on your right back then he will twist him, he will turn him and it’s a goal.
“So, he has certain super strengths that you cannot really compete. But if you play against him, it will be like ‘let’s stop those things’ then you can nullify him a little bit. But he’s a top, top player.”

For Aubameyang now, it’s about getting back in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI after he was dropped for the North London derby.
Whilst it wasn’t ideal for Arteta to drop his captain for that game because of discipline issues, it has left the Gabon star fresh for their Europa League showdown on Thursday.
But it will be interesting to see if Aubameyang is starting for Arsenal when they next lock horns in the Premier League because those who started at the weekend were outstanding and deserve to keep their place for the West Ham clash.
