Alan Smith told Transfer Deadline Day on Sky Sports that ‘most clubs’ would want to sign Christian Eriksen, who was highly sought-after by Tottenham and Everton in January.

Twelve months after leaving Tottenham, it was heading towards being a remarkable situation where the struggling Inter playmaker was going to make a swift return to the Premier League.

Italian outlet TMW claimed that a sensational reunion with Spurs was on the cards, whilst the same outlet also claimed that Everton were also monitoring his situation.

Former Arsenal striker Smith shared that money and the current pandemic played a part in Eriksen staying in Italy.

On other clubs not looking to sign Eriksen: “Yes, I am surprised, but maybe they did,” said Smith. “But there’s a lot of money involved, isn’t there?! He went for big bucks in terms of his salary.

“Finances are so tight with the pandemic lasting so long. That’s the main reason.

“If he were to come back to England, you would have a hungry player, I think. He has been kicking his heels for a long time at Inter Milan and I know he has moved back into the manager’s plans lately.

“But he’s too good to be on the bench and not used. Most clubs would want that creative force.”

When Eriksen put pen-to-paper on a £17 million deal with Inter in January 2020 (BBC Sport), the aim was to progress his career, but it has been far from that.

If anything, his career has gone backwards, and whilst he is starting to pick up minutes again on the pitch, it still isn’t enough for the light-footed playmaker, who is yet to score or assist in Serie A this season.

Either way, an important six months await Eriksen because if his current form continues then he will be heading for that exit door in the summer.
