Sky pundit claims Liverpool player with ‘so much ability’ doesn’t start for Newcastle

Darren Bent has stated that Liverpool striker Divock Origi doesn’t start for Newcastle United, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (07/12/21 at 7:05 pm).

The former Sunderland player stated that Origi has ‘so much ability’, else he wouldn’t be at Liverpool, but he doesn’t get ahead of Callum Wilson at St James’ Park.

Over the weekend, Origi was at it again from the substitutes bench when he scored a stoppage-time winner at Wolves.

There has been a lot of talk about the role Origi plays at Liverpool and whether others would be content with knowing that they aren’t going to play regular minutes.

Bent scored over 100 Premier League goals during his career and he shared he understands Origi’s viewpoint, even though he doesn’t agree with it.

“I would want to play, week in and week out,” said Bent. “But he’s in such a unique situation. Big goals in the Champions League final and Merseyside derbies.

“So, I can understand, from his perspective, at being comfortable their. He knows he will never be the main man, so maybe he’s happy with that.

“I think he is only 26-year-old old and has so much football to go. He has so much ability, else he wouldn’t be at Liverpool. I would like to see him go elsewhere, but I understand why he’s not.

“Where would he go? You start going down the table. Newcastle, of course, with their money. But, even at Newcastle, would he start ahead of Callum Wilson? No.”

At the end of the day, Origi has a Premier League and Champions League medal around his neck.

He scored crucial goals for the Reds as they lifted those trophies under Jurgen Klopp, including scoring in the Champions League final.

Would he swap that for regular minutes at a club below Liverpool’s level? Absolutely not.

If he wasn’t scoring the big goals or winning the trophies, then he would have been long gone.

But he is doing both, so many would probably still pick that road, even if it’s less frequent, rather than one that is constant but doesn’t provide you with the value or satisfaction you want.
