Alan Smith has said to Sky Sports, during their live Premier League coverage, that he thinks Everton midfielder Allan really struggled yesterday.

Everton were beaten 2-0 by Southampton and Allan failed to make much of an impression.

The Brazilian midfielder, who has made such an impressive start to life in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, just couldn’t influence the game as much as has been expected.

And Smith suggests that he was disappointed with the summer signing’s display, after he singled him out for praise before the game.

“Allan has struggled out there actually,” he said. “I picked him out at the start for the good work that he has done. But it hasn’t been his best game today.”

Allan was far from the only Everton player who failed to have much influence on the game yesterday.

The Toffees just didn’t look themselves, as they fell to their first defeat of the Premier League season.

Goals from Stuart Armstrong and Che Adams in the first half put Everton on the back foot in the contest, and they rarely threatened a comeback.

Despite the defeat, Everton still lead the way in the Premier League table, with their next match coming against Newcastle United on Sunday.
