Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Everton managerial target, Wayne Rooney, is doing a job that is ‘out of this world’ at Derby County, as he told Sky Sports.

Everton sacked Rafa Benitez on Sunday, as they ended his ill-fated and morale-sapping reign after only six months.

Given his Liverpool past, many made it clear before Benitez was handed the keys to Goodison Park that this was a huge mistake.

And so it has turned out to be, with the owner, Farhad Moshiri, now looking for yet another manager.

Understandably, given the job Rooney is doing at points-deducted and financially-stricken, Derby, his name has been touted to possibly replace Benitez.

Redknapp touched upon whether Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer is ready for that role and whether Duncan Ferguson can fill in the void, right now.

“Duncan Ferguson is the sort of person, right now, who is there,” said Redknapp. “I think he would do a great job. He did a pretty good job when he was interim charge last time.

“People are talking about Wayne Rooney. Now, the job he is doing at Derby is out of this world. The fact that he has got them out of that position. This would be the greatest escape of all time.

“Now, whether he is the right fit? I don’t know. That’s the sort of options they will be looking at.”

Entering administration, deducted 21 points, unable to sign players, losing players currently on the club’s books and, at times, hardly having enough players to play matches.

Rooney has had to deal with one of the toughest situations a manager will ever face in his career.

And to think he is dealing with all of this in his first job and doing an incredible job is a testament to his character and skill.

Whilst Rooney would be a great fit for Everton, it would be difficult to see him leave Derby in their current state midway through the season.
