Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel, Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has been discussing Wilfried Zaha and Tottenham’s interest, or lack thereof, in the Ivorian.
Indeed, Thomas has spoken with his sources about the potential of Zaha going to Tottenham, but Spurs aren’t too keen on the Crystal Palace star due to his age.
At the age of 29, Zaha probably isn’t going to improve from here on in, and for that reason, Tottenham aren’t too keen to pursue a move, with sources statin to Thomas that the north London outfit think Zaha is too old to sign.
What’s been said?
Thomas discussed Zaha alongside Spurs’ interest in Ruslan Malinovskyi.
“It’s not far down the line, there has been an enquiry made, and I think Tottenham wanted to loan him, but Atalanta aren’t keen to do that. He’s 29 with one year left on his contract, which makes him vulnerable, but if you’re Tottenham, the club prefer to sign younger players. The age thing puts the club off. There are others out there who are 29 with one year left, Wilfried Zaha, for example, who I think Spurs should sign, but I’ve been told he’s too old for them as well,” Thomas said.
Not too old
We really can’t get our heads around this one.
Zaha, at the age of 29, is by no means too old to be signing this summer especially as he’s in the final year of his contract and could be available for a cut-price fee.
29 is no age in football these days. Just look at Heung-Min Son, he’s arguably Spurs’ best player and he’s 30.
In fact, Tottenham have signed a 34-year-old this summer in the shape of Ivan Perisic, so why is bringing Zaha in out of the question?
Signing young players is always beneficial, but it feels like Spurs are biting their noses off to spite their faces here.
Zaha has been described as ‘unplayable’ in the past, he’s a fantastic footballer, and as Thomas says, Spurs should be in for him if they feel he is gettable.
