Speaking on the Last Word on Spurs YouTube channel, Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has claimed that Tottenham are now extensively scouting the Championship.

Players from the Championship have been shining in the Premier League for a few years now. The likes of Jarrod Bowen, James Maddison and Jack Grealish are amongst the best performers in the Premier League after cutting their teeth in the EFL.

However, despite their clearly being an abundance of talent in the Championship, Spurs have failed to exploit that market – until now that is.

Indeed, Bridge says that Spurs are finally looking towards the second-tier for new signings.

What’s been said?

The journalist shared what he knows about Tottenham’s scouting policy.

“Djed Spence, again, he’s one of a number of players Spurs are looking at. Finally though, I’m really glad to say that Spurs are looking at the Championship because it’s been long overdue. They’ve been too obsessed with looking at Holland and France all the time,” Bridge said.

“Spurs have a number of scouts at many Championship matches at the moment, because, as I’ve said, they have to be careful with their homegrown quota and there’s some real talent in that division.”

Bridge touched on Spurs’ interest in the Championship again later on when asked about Keane Lewis-Potter.

“As I say, Spurs have scouts at every single Championship game right now,” Bridge said.

About time

It’s about time that Tottenham started looking towards the EFL again.

Spurs should know better than any other team that there are gems to be found in the lower leagues, just look at the impact Dele Alli initially had after joining from MK Dons, but for some reason, they’ve ignored the EFL for the past few years.

It remains to be seen which players they go after, but this certainly looks to be a situation worth keeping an eye on in the coming months.
