Burnley are in the market for a new goalscorer and Southampton’s Long could fit the bill.
Burnley are in the market for a new goalscorer after selling Andre Gray to Watford on Wednesday, and have already seen their odds on re-signing Liverpool’s Danny Ings cut to 3/1.
Shane Long of Southampton
But according to the bookmakers, Long is a slightly more likely recruit, with the Clarets as short as 6/4 to prise him away from St Mary’s.
Even after the sale of former Burnley frontman Jay Rodriguez to West Bromwich Albion, Long is one of four senior strikers currently on Southampton’s books.
And after he only started 19 times across four competitions last season, it is plausible that the Saints would be open to offers for the 30-year-old, who remains under contract until 2020.
Burnley are also seeking to replace centre-back Michael Keane before the end-of-month transfer deadline, and The Sun reports they have made a £10 million bid for Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross.

Huddersfield Town (12/1), West Ham United (14/1), Brighton & Hove Albion (16/1), Swansea City (18/1) and Everton (25/1) are also listed as contenders to sign Long from Southampton.
