Newcastle United’s priority for the January transfer window has to be a right winger but it shouldn’t be Sevilla’s Rony Lopes.

The former Monaco man has had a torrid time in Spain after joining Sevilla in the summer transfer window. Lopes has played just 43 minutes of first-team football so far and he seems to have no future with Los Hispalenses under Julen Lopetegui.
However, that should by no means make him a valuable target for Newcastle. The Magpies have lacked creativity down the right-flank so far this campaign and as much as they need a right-winger in January, Lopes is not the right player for them.
The 23-year-old is lightweight and will take some time to adjust to the physicality of the league. His confidence is low after having scored just four goals since the start of last season. Lopes has had just one good campaign in his career so far and that came two years ago.
He scored 15 times for Monaco in the 2017/18 campaign but things haven’t quite gone his way since. Signing him would bring back tough memories of Florian Thauvin for Magpies fans, who has been brilliant in Ligue 1 but was shocking for the Magpies a few years ago.

One alternative Steve Bruce should consider instead of Lopes is Hull City’s Jarrod Bowen. The 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength since the start of the 2017/18 season and Newcastle have been credited with an interest in him ahead of the January transfer window. (Express)
Bowen has scored 42 times for the Tigers since May 2017 which is an exceptional return considering that he is only 22 years old. The attacker, who although hasn’t played in the Premier League yet, knows how physical the English game is and he would settle in much quicker than someone like Lopes whose only experience in England came from five domestic cup games for Manchester City.
Lopes would possibly be easier to get with no other teams showing interest in him but Bowen would certainly be the smarter choice and Bruce should choose him over the Portuguese in January.
