Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes but Tottenham could still play a part at the last minute.
Fernandes has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and a deal was said to be close. Portuguese outlet Record claimed that Sporting had already identified a replacement for their skipper in Velez Sarsfield’s Lucas Robertone and that a switch to the red side of Manchester could be completed by the end of the week.
However, things could take a massive turn in the final few days of the English transfer window as Tottenham reportedly plan to hijack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s move for the hugely talented Portuguese international.
The proposition of playing in the Champions League next season with Spurs could prove to be a massive temptation for Fernandes over playing in the Europa League with Manchester United. Sporting remain adamant that they will not part ways with their captain for anything less than £60m but after last season’s heroics, he could well be worth the big bucks.
The 24-year-old scored a staggering 32 goals and provided 18 assists in all competitions in a spectacular individual campaign for Sporting last season. If Fernandes can come up with half as many goal involvements this season for either of the clubs, the team he ends up with could go a long way in achieving their ambitions.
At 24, Fernandes is at the perfect stage of his career to take the next big step in his career and the Premier League is the ideal destination to showcase his skills next season. Spurs will be making a humungous statement of intent if they can beat Manchester United to his signing and Pochettino will have arguably the best midfield in the league with Tanguy Ndombele and Christian Eriksen alongside the Portuguese international.
