Everton have just three senior centre-halves after failing to strengthen in the summer.

According to a report from UOL, Everton have had an offer for Lucas Verissimo rejected by Brazilian club Santos.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have just Michael Keane, Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate capable of playing in the heart of their defence. The Toffees failed to replace Kurt Zouma after he returned to Chelsea in the summer and their bid to bring in a new defender has reportedly been turned down.

The report claims that Everton proposed a loan move for Verissimo with an option to buy him at the end of this season. However, Santos’ president, José Carlos Peres, wants to sell the Brazilian defender right away to raise funds.

An academy product at Santos, Verissimo has made huge strides in the Brazilian top-flight over the last few years. The 24-year-old has become a leader at the back for the Alvinegro having played 100 games for them so far.

Verissimo is incredibly strong with his tackling and is one of the best players in the Serie A when it comes to 1v1 defending. His 6ft 2in frame allows him to dominate in the air and he is someone who enjoys the physical side of the game which suits him to the Premier League.

However, he is by no means a readymade starter for Everton. The Brazilian still has a lot to improve in his game with respect to positioning and his ability with the ball at his feet.

Missing out on him wouldn’t be that big of a deal for Everton. As good as Verissimo is at the moment, there are better centre-halves available in the market. However, if Everton decide to pay the big bucks and bring him in, he has the potential to become a top defender in the next two years.
