Christian Eriksen’s saga at Tottenham Hotspur could take another turn in the coming days.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Spanish champions Barcelona have enquired about the possibility of signing Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen this month.

The talk of the Dane leaving the club has been going on for well over a year now. Inter Milan were almost certain to sign the midfielder this month but if the new report has any truth to it, things could change very quickly.

A move to Inter Milan made a lot of sense for Eriksen who has been adamant about leaving Spurs for quite some time now. However, the Nerazzurri were never his preferred option a few months ago but he was left with no choice.

ESPN reported earlier in the summer window that Eriksen only wanted to join one of Real Madrid, Juventus or Barcelona. The former two are nowhere in the picture at the moment but could Barca’s interest ruin Inter Milan’s party?

The report claims that Tottenham are holding out for £17 million for their star midfielder and Inter are close to matching that. Yet that is a very small fee for someone of Eriksen’s quality and Barcelona could well look to hijack the deal.

Tottenham signed Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on loan earlier this month. The Portuguese midfielder provides some much-needed steel for Spurs in the centre of their park and his arrival allows the likes of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso to play further up the pitch.

Eriksen’s imminent departure is a big blow for Spurs but they should be able to cope without him. Lo Celso played his heart out against Norwich this week and showed that he is more than capable of stepping up to the plate.

Mourinho would certainly have loved to kept hold of Eriksen but Barcelona snatching the former Ajax man away from Antonio Conte could well put a smile on his face after their altercation at Stamford Bridge a few years ago.
