Leicester City’s Caglar Soyuncu was heavily linked with a move away but Brendan Rodgers was right to keep hold of him.

Caglar Soyuncu’s brilliant showing against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge showed why Brendan Rodgers was right to keep hold of him despite alleged interest from his home country.

Turkish outlet Fanatik reported back in May that Fenerbahce were keen on signing the 23-year-old defender after a dismal start to life in England.

Rumours about interest from the Turkish club emerged once again at the end of July (Fanatik) but Leicester held on to Soyuncu and they could now reap their rewards.

The Turkish international started just four games in the Premier League last season but, with Harry Maguire now gone, he can expect to start a lot more games.

Soyuncu, alongside Jonny Evans, is Rodgers’ first choice defender and his performance against Chelsea proved why he is worthy of a consistent starting spot.

The young Turk looked incredibly composed on the ball and stayed calm despite immense pressure from Chelsea in the first half. Soyuncu stuck to his guns and showed glimpses of why he was so highly rated in Germany during his time at Freiburg.

Soyuncu made five clearances, won back possession eight times, won six of his 10 attempted duels all while maintaining a healthy passing accuracy of 86%. The former Freiburg man, despite being renowned for giving away fouls due to his rash nature at times, conceded just one foul all game against the Blues which shows serious improvement from the previous few seasons. With just Wes Morgan available at Rodgers’ disposal as his senior central defensive option, a lot of responsibility will be on Soyuncu’s shoulders and, if he can perform as he did against Chelsea, Leicester will not miss Maguire as much as people first thought.
