Aston Villa could have Everton to thank for helping them avoid an absolute disaster this summer.

According to a report from Sky Sports, Everton are in talks with Manchester United to sign Argentine defender Marcos Rojo on a permanent deal.

Rojo has further gone down the pecking order at Old Trafford after the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester City for a record fee. Everton, who missed out on re-signing Kurt Zouma, have allegedly turned their attention to the Argentine and a move could be possible in the next few hours.

The Argentine defender, who has also been linked with a move to newly-promoted Aston Villa, has had a torrid last two seasons at Manchester United where injuries have kept him out consistently. Rojo has missed a staggering 53 games since April 2017 for the Red Devils and he would be a massive gamble for any club this summer.

Everton have little choice in the market with the transfer deadline fast approaching and Rojo could be their last resort to save their back line. Michael Keane and Yerry Mina are the club’s only other experienced options but the latter, along with Rojo, are unreliable due to their injury history.

Villa look to have been given a blessing in disguise with Everton’s late attempt for the Argentine and missing out on him is perfect for them after an exceptional transfer window.

Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Bjorn Engels, James Chester and Kortney Hause are enough options at the back for Dean Smith and he should let Everton have a free run at Rojo.
