According to a report from the Mirror, Sheffield United have shown interest in signing Belgian side Mechelen’s goalkeeper Michael Verrips this summer.

The Blades are keen on re-signing Manchester United’s Dean Henderson on another loan deal but the Red Devils are reluctant to send him back to Bramall Lane before he signs a new contract.

Wilder has just a little over two weeks before the transfer window ends to strengthen his squad and waiting on Henderson isn’t a wise move.

The report reveals that Verrips is looking to force a move out of Mechelen on a free transfer and if he can manage to do that, Sheffield United shouldn’t think twice over making the young Dutchman their preferred target for a place between the sticks next season.

Henderson was undoubtedly one of the Blades’ best players last season and missing out on him isn’t ideal. However, with time running out and a player of Verrips quality and potential possibly available on a free transfer, Chris Wilder could end up with a real gem on a permanent deal this summer.

Standing at 6ft 5in, Verrips is a giant in goal who is capable of pulling off incredible saves from improbable positions. The 22-year-old is very quick to go down and get back up despite his huge frame which is a brilliant sign for a goalkeeper of his age.

The move to the Premier League will certainly be a huge step in Verrips career but it is certainly one that he deserves and Sheffield United should make him a priority over Dean Henderson this summer, especially if he will be available on a free transfer.
