Could West Ham, Chelsea or any other Premier League clubs take a look at Dejan Stankovic this summer?

It has been a rumour for about a month now; but now it is official; Dejan Stankovic is leaving Inter Milan this summer.

It was first reported that the option of cancelling the club icons contract a year early was being given serious consideration back in June and now it has come to pass.

Last season the 34-year-old struggled to keep himself fit; making just three appearances in the Nerazzuri and that continues the trend for the Serbian.

His first-team appearances have become more and more fleeting over the past three seasons and after nine years; he is on his way.

Here is what he said about the decision to mutually cancel his deal:

“I don’t know if I can find the right words to say goodbye and to thank you properly for everything you have given me, your affection, your trust and your honesty… It’s been an honour to wear these colours and they will always remain on my skin. I’ll never remove them; nobody can ever remove them.”

During his illustrious career in Italy with both Lazio and Inter Milan he has won a number of honours including six Serie A titles, five Coppa Italia’s and a Champions League; so he will certainly attract attention this summer.

Reports have already suggested he could be about to enter that sort of semi-retirement that many an ageing professional footballer goes through and head abroad. He has been linked with moves to the MLS, A-League and Qatar Stars League this summer; and that would obviously have its perks.

However given the competitive streak in Stankovic would not suggest this is a formality.

He has been linked with a move to Fiorentina and could certainly still do a job so should Premier League teams be interested.

West Ham have previously been linked with the player and Big Sam has a good record when it comes to luring big names to his club.

Meanwhile Jose Mourinho worked with him at Inter Milan and he could certainly be an excellent squad player in the Premier League.

While his legs may have deserted him class is permanent and if you can manage to reduce his wages to bare minimum; he might just be an excellent signing this summer.

Would you like your team to snap up Stankovic this summer?
