The Queens Park Rangers left-back played under Dean Smith, the Aston Villa manager, at Brentford.

Left-back was a position Aston Villa, by all accounts, tried and failed to strengthen in the summer transfer window.

Matt Targett (Southampton) and Joe Bryan (Bristol City, now Fulham) were among the names said to have been targeted by the previous Villa manager, Steve Bruce.

And while Neil Taylor has since enjoyed a revival under Dean Smith, Bruce’s successor may be interested in comments made this week by a Queens Park Rangers player who operates in the same position.

Jake Bidwell, who starred under Smith at Brentford, before leaving for QPR in 2016.

He is, however, in the final year of his contract at Loftus Road, and told Football.London this week: “I haven’t heard anything from the club at the moment (regarding a new contract) but I’m sure they’ve got a plan one way or another.”

And if Smith was to decide he is still a left-back short at Aston Villa, then a cut-price move for Bidwell could be an option in January.

Or he could wait six months and get him on a free – assuming of course that QPR fail to renew his deal in the meantime.
