Sir Geoff Hurst believes the Tottenham striker could replace Wayne Rooney.
World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst has told the Daily Mail that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane can replace Wayne Rooney as the talisman for his country.
Hurst, who scored a hat-trick for England in a World Cup final, expects the 24-year-old Tottenham striker to play at the peak of his form for the next five to six years.
Rooney has recently announced his retirement from international football, and Hurst believes that Kane can replace the void.
The Everton star is England’s all-time leading goalscorer with 53 goals, and Hurst is confident that Kane won’t be able to break that record.
“He’s had a couple of years scoring the goals for Spurs and England and you would assume, all things being equal, Harry Kane will be around the way he is performing now for the next six-odd years at the very least,” said Hurst, as quoted by The Daily Mail.
When asked whether Kane could beat Rooney’s record, Hurst added: “No. It is phenomenal what he achieved, to beat the record (of Sir Bobby Charlton), and his record stands for itself in terms of games and goals.”
Tottenham Hotspur fans may have a different opinion. Kane made his international debut in 2015, and has already 10 goals to his name.
The 24-year-old’s international career is just taking shape at the moment, and he is expected to score plenty of goals for both club and country.
Rooney started his international career with a bang at a very early age, but his performance have gradually declined.
If Kane can maintain a healthy scoring record for the next six or seven years, he could come close to matching Rooney’s record.
Although we’ve seen time and again that a player performing at the top level for his club, doesn’t always replicate that for his country.
Then again, it is too early to predict that Kane cannot surpass Rooney’s scoring record.
