Mark Warburton’s Glasgow Rangers are unlikely to compete with Old Firm rivals Celtic, suggests Sir Alex Ferguson.

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told The Scottish Sun that it is difficult to see Rangers competing with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers won automatic promotion to the Scottish Premiership from the Scottish Championship at the end of last season.

The Gers were expected by many to compete for the league title this campaign, but at the moment they are fighting only for the second spot.

Mark Warburton’s side are second in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 26 points from 14 matches.

Rangers are eight points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Celtic, who have two games in hand.

The Gers are two points clear of third-placed Aberdeen, who have a match in hand.

Former Rangers forward and Aberdeen manager Ferguson believes that it could take a while for Warburton’s side to compete with Celtic for a while.

“Rangers are finding it very difficult,” the former United manager told The Scottish Sun. “They’ve got a long way to go before they can get to the Rangers standard of my time, particularly as a player there.

“There’s no doubt they’ve gone through an incredible upheaval in terms of what’s happened to that football club.

“It’s been tragic in many, many ways. But it’s difficult to see them jumping Celtic and overcoming Celtic at this moment in time.”

Rangers will return to action on Wednesday evening when they take on Heart of Midlothian away from home at the Tynecastle Stadium in the Scottish Premiership.

Hearts are fourth in the league table at the moment with 23 points from 14 matches.
