Trevor Sinclair has appeared to confirm that Manchester United had a scouting presence to watch Leeds United’s Illan Meslier against Manchester City on Tuesday evening.
Leeds slumped to a demoralising 7-0 defeat away to the Premier League champions.
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United figures were in attendance to study the 21-year-old Whites goalkeeper up close.
And Sinclair, who has close ties to the Etihad Stadium club after spending a chunk of his playing career with them, seems to have confirmed the transfer rumour.
He said on talkSPORT this morning: “I mean Meslier, TC, Tony Coton, who is one of the chief scouts at Manchester United was watching Meslier, I believe, because they believe he is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and he ships seven.
“So, I do not know whether that is going to do his chances any good of getting that move to Manchester United.”
Has the Leeds sensation killed his chances of joining Manchester United?
Well, no. That isn’t how this works really.
If the Red Devils were interested enough to scout him on enemy territory then conceding seven goals isn’t going to make them decide to pursue other targets.
The Leeds player – who cost £5 million in 2020 – is undeniably one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe and there’s no denying that the youngster is going to improve.
If the Old Trafford outfit want him, it’ll be as a long-term successor for David de Gea and therefore judging him negatively on the back his performance versus City simply makes zero sense.
Leeds were abysmal to a man on the day and whatever goalkeeper Pep Guardiola’s troops were up against, an onslaught would’ve been the result.
