Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi bemoaned his side’s first-leg defeat to Liverpool, branding it an “unfair” result after Inter failed to overturn the tie in the second leg. Inter won 1-0, but Liverpool go through 2-1 on aggregate.

After goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah saw Liverpool come into the second leg at Anfield with a two-goal lead. They had a number of chances to add to that two-goal advantage – but ended up losing 1-0.

Mo Salah hit both posts, while Joel Matip saw a first-half header cannon back off the bar. Luis Diaz came on as a substitute, and was handed a golden chance from six yards out – only for Arturo Vidal to block his shot.

Inter boss Inzaghi discussed his side’s exit after beating Liverpool, but losing on aggregate. He bemoaned the first-leg result which he thought was “unfair”, while delivering a verdict on Liverpool’s home – Anfield.

“We had a great match, in a very difficult stadium and against a very strong team,” Inzaghi said. “The boys were very good, there is a bit of regret from the first leg because the result; it was unfair from what we had seen.”

Inzaghi on Liverpool exit: Was defeat unfair on Inter?

Liverpool were excellent in the first leg and while Inter did have chances, the Reds were the better side and deserved to win. Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the game in the second leg, on Tuesday night.

But even at Anfield, Liverpool dominated the chances and on another day, with a bit more luck, they could have won by two or three goals. Salah is normally pinpoint; his two shots against the posts normally find the net.
