Newcastle were reportedly closing in on a move to land the Belgian defender.

Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi has been quoted by Sky Italy’s Gianluca Di Marzio as saying that he simply cannot understand why Newcastle United have opted against signing Jordan Lukaku.
The Chronicle reported that a deal for the 24-year-old left-back had been called off due to concerns over the eight-time Belgium international’s fitness and proneness to injury.
In recent seasons, Lukaku has suffered with multiple knee injuries. Even this season, Romelu’s little brother was unable to feature for Inzaghi’s side until October due to a ligament problem.
It has seen Newcastle call off a deal to sign Lukaku despite failing to land any new players this month, and Italian legend Inzaghi does not understand why The Toon have decided against Lukaku.
“Along with the club, we agreed that Jordan should go out on loan,” Inzaghi said. “Then he had some complications with Newcastle. From tomorrow, he will return to being a Lazio player 100 per cent.
“I have a frank rapport with my players. Lukaku proved he was in good shape, otherwise he wouldn’t have played against Napoli. He expressed the desire to play more often and I want only those who are enthusiastic to be here.”

Newcastle fans are growing increasingly frustrated that their club have been unable to sign any new players, with the club in desperate need of a left-back, central midfielder, number 10 and a winger.
The Toon signed Islam Slimani last season who was struggling with muscle injuries, and he managed just four appearances during the second half of the 2017-18 campaign. That may have been in Newcastle minds, regarding Lukaku.
