Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has congratulated his former Reds teammate Steven Gerrard on Twitter after the ex-Anfield captain was appointed as Rangers manager.

Gerrard, 37, has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Ibrox where he will go head to head with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who remains in charge of Celtic.

The job at Ibrox signals Gerrard’s first foray into the world of management, after previously being in charge of Liverpool’s Under-18 side following his retirement from professional football back in 2016.

Mignolet, who played alongside Gerrard for two years after joining the club from Sunderland in 2013, congratulated Gerrard and claims he could return to Anfield later on in his managerial career.

Gerrard will begin work as Rangers manager in the summer, with Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson taking over as a caretaker management duo for the remaining three games this season.

The new Gers boss is likely to be in the stands for Saturday’s clash against Kilmarnock at Ibrox, before going up against Aberdeen and Hibernian in their quest to finish second.
