Simon Jordan has backed Steven Gerrard to stay at Rangers amid talk that he could be the next Derby County manager.
The former Crystal Palace owner has claimed that Gerrard is on the ‘cusp of an opportunity’ at Ibrox because Celtic are ‘not the Celtic they once were’.
The Times have reported that Gerrard has rejected the chance to replace Frank Lampard at Pride Park if the Englishman leaves and takes over at Chelsea.
In what was Gerrard’s first season at Rangers, and as a manager, he guided his team to a runners-up spot, with Celtic running away with the Premiership title once again.
Speaking to Jim White on TalkSport (19/06/2019 10:25 am), former Crystal Palace owner, Jordan made it clear why Gerrard would stay at Rangers as he made a huge claim about Celtic, which will infuriate their fans.
“Rangers is a far bigger club than Derby,” Jordan told TalkSport. “Derby have a brilliant chairman [Mel Morris]. But, in this instance, there is nothing that would give any indication that there would be any benefit [in him taking the Derby job].
“He has been in a job for a year. We live in a world where there was this old myth about how long managers should be given in a job. Now it seems it has fallen on its head. Managers are qualified as successes within a year.
“He [Gerrard] may be on the cusp of an opportunity because Celtic are not the Celtic they once were. So, if I were Steven Gerrard or if there was anyone advising him, Rangers is the job, not Derby. If you’re being offered a Premier League job, with an established budget then maybe that’s something different.”

There’s no reason why Gerrard would drop a level to join Derby County because that’s what it would feel like if he were to do that.
But considering he is set to stay, winning the Premiership title with Rangers would be far bigger than achieving anything of remote with Derby and Gerrard will be backing himself to win something next term.
However, a relentless winning machine in Celtic stand in their way and if they get things right during the summer transfer window then they might just be a tough opposition to crack once again.
