This is a difficult time for Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce.
Not only is he out of the loop with regards to a £300 million takeover of the Magpies, but there’s speculation about his job.
According to Sky Sports, Mauricio Pochettino is Newcastle’s potential new owners’ first-choice preference as a replacement for Bruce at St James’s Park, while other big names are also linked.
The veteran English boss has had less than a year in the North-East and Newcastle were 13th in the Premier League table when the season was suspended due to the global health crisis.
It hasn’t been a brilliant season for Bruce – whose side are eight points clear of the relegation zone – but it hasn’t been a horrible one either.
And former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has claimed to talkSPORT that the 59-year-old deserves to remain in the hot seat if and when the takeover is finalised.
Jordan said: “Bruce I think has earnt the right to have an opportunity to be given some backing and perhaps be given a year to give these guys who are coming through the door with more money than God, the feeling that he can take them where they want to go.”
Will Bruce get the chance that Jordan wants? Well, probably not and it comes down to profile.
If you’re Phillipe Coutinho, would you want to play under Bruce or Pochettino? The answer is fairly obvious and it’s clear that if Newcastle want to attract big-name superstars, they’re going to need a big-name manager steering the ship.
