If Sunderland manage to complete a double-swoop for Lewis Grabban and Jason Steele, they may just have done enough to make themselves promotion contenders for the season ahead.
According to a report in the Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats want to snap up Bournemouth forward Grabban, while The Sun suggest that Blackburn Rovers Jason Steele is on their radar.
And the additions of Grabban and Steele could fill the gaps currently in Sunderland’s squad.
Grabban is a proven scorer at Championship level, and would increase the productivity of Simon Grayson’s attack considerably.
Steele, meanwhile, is a very reliable stopper in the second tier – and would mean that the Black Cats could form his defence around the quality of the 26-year-old.
Sunderland’s signings so far this summer have been solid, if unspectacular.
But with Grayson planning on bringing Grabban and Steele to the Stadium of Light, Sunderland may just have the quality required to drive them right up into promotion contention.
And Sunderland’s stay outside the Premier League may not be as prolonged as first feared.
