Leeds United suffered play-off heartache against Derby County on Wednesday night.
Simon Grayson has worryingly stated that Marcelo Bielsa might tell the Leeds United board that he ‘doesn’t need another year’ at the club.
On Wednesday night, Leeds suffered a heartbreaking play-off semi-final defeat to Derby County at Elland Road despite going into the game with a one-goal advantage.
Early in the first half, The Whites doubled that advantage, but Frank Lampard’s side scored four goals in either side of the half to book a final place at Wembley.
Speaking on Kick Off on TalkSport (15/05/2019 at 9:55 pm), Grayson shared his thoughts on Bielsa’s future and the conversations he could be having with the board.
On what will happen with Bielsa: “Unsure,” Grayson told TalkSport. “He’s still under contract. But I think if he turned around to the board at Leeds United and said that he doesn’t need another year I am pretty sure they wouldn’t stand in his way.
“Would he want another bite at the cherry? Would he want to go through what has been a gruelling season? The intensity he studies the opposition. His training. He’s very demanding.
“Could he accept another year of playing, Saturday, Tuesday and Saturday at his age? I am sure things will come out in the next few days about what’s going to happen. But he’s certainly been a massive bonus for Leeds this season.”
There is no doubt that Bielsa has been a breath of fresh air since his arrival to the second tier of English football last summer.
Despite working on a limited budget and a similar squad to last season, Bielsa took a mid-table team from last term and guided them to a top-three finish.
For large parts of the campaign, Leeds were sitting in the automatic places, but back-to-back defeats over the Easter period all but ended their hopes of earning promotion via the top two.
