Sunderland have been linked with Aston Villa forward Ross McCormack.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has told the Shields Gazette that he has been offered the opportunity to buy plenty of players in recent times, but he doesn’t feel that they would have improved his squad at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland’s summer business is still far from finished, despite the transfer window only being open for a month.

And Grayson insists that patience will be key, as Sunderland have been offered the chance to sign plenty of players, but he is searching for quality.

“There are players who have been offered to us over the last few days that have gone on to move to other clubs, but I felt that they weren’t going to make us any better,” he said.

“We have a good base here in the squad but we do need the extra quality that we are going to bring in, and sometimes that has to wait until later in the window because the Premier League clubs are getting their squad sorted.”

Sunderland have been heavily linked with a move for Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack recently in the Shields Gazette, with the Black Cats said to be keen on a loan deal.

However, Grayson seems to feel that Sunderland will have to wait a while before they can sign McCormack.

“Certain players are on big contracts and their clubs are not going to loan them out or sell them to the first team that comes along – they might wait until later in the window because someone else might come in from another club,” he said.

“It’s going to be a case of showing some patience, and not diving in when we don’t need to.”

Sunderland started with new signings James Vaughan and Lewis Grabban up-front in their first game of the season.

The Black Cats drew 1-1 with Derby County in their Championship opener, and their performance in the contest was heartening.

Sunderland are next in action on Thursday evening, when they take on Bury in the League Cup.
