Sunderland are closing in on Everton duo Tyias Browning and Aiden McGeady.

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has told The Sunderland Echo that deals for Everton duo Tyias Browning and Aiden McGeady are moving closer.

The Black Cats swooped to appoint former Preston boss Grayson as their new manager last week, and he has already made his first signing since arriving at the Stadium of Light.

Everton defender Brendan Galloway joined Sunderland on a season-long loan deal earlier this week, but Grayson isn’t finished dealing with the Toffees just yet.

Tyias Browning and Aiden McGeady – two misfits under Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park – have both emerged as targets for Sunderland, and deals for the duo to reunite with Grayson could be on the cards.

Defender Browning, 23, has come up through the ranks with Everton but has made just nine first-team appearances for the club, before Grayson took him on loan to Preston last season for a less-than-impressive spell.

The centre back – who can also play at right back – could be joined by 31-year-old winger McGeady, who was one of the Championship’s most impressive players last season.

Irish wide man McGeady found his best form under Grayson last term, and notched an impressive eight goals and nine assists for Preston during a superb loan spell.

Now, Sunderland boss Grayson has told the Sunderland Echo that both deals – Browning on loan and McGeady permanently – are moving closer to completion, though Browning is nearer to signing than McGeady right now.

“They are moving on closer,” said Grayson. “I don’t really comment too much on them, but I think Tyias is closer than McGeady. McGeady is talking to Everton about a few bits and bobs. It might be very quickly that those two can get done, hopefully anyway,” he added.
