Simon Grayson is adamant that Leeds United ace Kalvin Phillips is good enough to play in the Premier League as he lauded his qualities on the ball.

The 23-year-old has had a stunning season with Leeds and he played a key part in them finishing in third place, but he would have been deeply disappointed with how their season ended.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side conceded four goals in the second leg of their play-off semi-final encounter to Derby County, which ended their hopes of reaching England’s top-flight for another season.

Speaking to Jim White on TalkSport (20/05/2019 at 12:30 pm), Grayson shared how his former club have had to sell their star players in years gone by and how Phillips is good enough for the top level.

“It is something that has happened at Leeds United since I was there,” Grayson told TalkSport. “We lost the likes of Hawson, Becchio, Snodgrass, and Ronaldo Vieira went to Sampdoria last summer. Chris Wood went for £15 million. It has been over the last few years a club that has had to sell players to regroup a new bunch of players to get them to the next level.

If he’s capable of playing at a higher level: “I think so. He gets around the pitch. He can pass the ball with both feet. He’s dropped in at centre-back at times. I think he certainly can play in the Premier League. It’s not good for Leeds United fans.”

In previous seasons, Phillips always showcased his talents and qualities as a defensive-minded midfielder. But there is no doubt that the arrival of Bielsa took his game to another level.

Phillips’ ability on the ball, footballing brain and ability to play various positions has now stood out and he has arguably been the most improved player at Elland Road over these last 12 months.

If Leeds can keep Bielsa, keep hold of their star players and bulk up their squad for next season then it’ll increase their chances of pushing for promotion again next term.
