Leeds currently sit at the top of the Championship.

Simon Grayson manager of Leeds looks on before the npower Championship match between Crystal Palace and Leeds United at Selhurst Park on January 14, 2012 in London, England.

Simon Grayson has said in his League Paper column that Leeds United are showing all the characteristics required to go and gain promotion to the Premier League from the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa has guided his Leeds side to 45 points from just 22 league games, which sees the Whites sit a point clear of Norwich City but more importantly, six ahead of the play-off places.

A win against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon would see Leeds top the Championship table at Christmas for the first time since their relegation in 2004. 15 years later, Leeds could return to the Premier League.

Former Leeds manager Grayson is the only Whites boss to have experienced promotion with the Whites since the club’s fall from grace in 2004, taking Leeds back to the Championship. He reckons they are on track to return to the top flight.

“Hopefully any lack of signings won’t come back to bite them as it did with us. But as a supporter of the club, I’m confident,” Grayson said. “At the start of the season, everybody questioned whether Leeds could keep up the intensity.

“Whether they’d burn out by winter, whether they could dig out ugly results. But since losing 4-1 to West Brom before the last international break, they’ve done exactly that, with five scrappy wins in as many games.

“They’re showing all the characteristics you need to win promotion.”

Consecutive wins against Bristol City, Reading, Sheffield United, QPR and Bolton have pushed Leeds into first place, finally leapfrogging Norwich last weekend as the Canaries failed to dispose of Bristol City – drawing 2-2.

Daniel Farke’s Norwich have the chance to go top for 24 hours with a win over Blackburn Rovers, with Leeds playing on Sunday. But Blackburn are unbeaten in their last three games, and have lost just one of 11 games at Ewood Park.
