Sunderland have made big changes to their goalkeeping department already this summer.

Simon Grayson has confirmed to the Chronicle that Sunderland want to sign Robbin Ruiter this summer.

Ruiter has been on trial with Sunderland over the past week, and he has impressed during his time on Wearside.

Ruiter has played in the Black Cats’ last two friendly matches.

And Grayson said: “He certainly has. He has been very composed, he’s done everything that is required, and when he has needed to make big saves he has made them.

“We’ll analyse the situation, talk to his representatives, and see if there is a deal to be done. He’s been very positive.”

If Grayson can get a deal over the line for Ruiter then his goalkeeping options will look much stronger.

Sunderland lost Jordan Pickford and Vito Mannone this summer, but they have brought in Jason Steele already, with Ruiter expected to follow.

If the Dutchman does sign up, it could mean that youngster Max Stryjek is made available for loan.

“If we get another one in, say Robbin, then it might allow Max to go out on loan and get some experience,” Grayson added.

Stryjek has actually caught the eye when given a chance by Sunderland, but he remains young and needs experience.

The Black Cats were very busy in the transfer market yesterday, bringing in both Steele and Lewis Grabban.

Sunderland’s season gets under way in two weekends’ time, when they take on Derby County.
