Leeds United and Aston Villa played out a controversial draw at Elland Road today.
Simon Grayson has told talkSPORT 2 that Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford had an Aston Villa player by the neck during this afternoon’s controversial draw at Elland Road.
Leeds drew 1-1 with the in-form Villans and lost their slim hope of winning automatic promotion to the Premier League in the process.
But many of the headlines will centre around the melee which ensued after United opened the scoring through Mateusz Klich in the second half, with the Poland international slotting home after Aston Villa had stopped playing due to a stoppage.
Anwar El-Ghazi was sent off for dragging Bamford to the ground in the brawl which followed, but former Leeds boss Grayson says that the Whites hitman – who was booked – was a touch fortunate to avoid a red himself.
He said on talkSPORT 2 during commentary: “I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t going to be any retrospective bans. I’ve seen one or two things go off there. Bamford I think was lucky because he threw somebody to the ground by the neck.”
Because Bamford was booked, he cannot face any retrospective action but Grayson is right, suspensions for other players could follow once the EFL analyse the carnage.
There is only one Championship game left, which means that both teams could be missing key players for the playoffs on the back of this, if retrospective bans are handed down.
