Odsonne Edouard has enjoyed an excellent season for Celtic after signing on a permanent basis in the summer.

Simon Donnelly has suggested that someone told him last year that Odsonne Edouard will go on to become a better player for Celtic than Moussa Dembele was, and he is starting to agree with that statement, in comments reported by the Daily Record.

Edouard has enjoyed an outstanding season following his permanent move to Parkhead. The Frenchman has scored 18 goals in all competitions having previously bagged 11 goals while he was on loan with the Hoops.

His goals have been hugely important with Dembele leaving in the summer to join Lyon. And Donnelly admitted that he is now starting to believe that the 21-year-old could become every bit as good as his former teammate.

“Edouard has the potential. He is 21 years of age and he’s only going to get better,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “We spoke about Dembele before he left and he’s found his form at Lyon.

Moussa Dembele celebrates his 2nd goal (Celtic's 4th) during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Somebody said to me that he thought Odsonne would be better than Dembele after he scored his three goals in two games against Rangers at the turn of last year. Looking at it now, there’s no reason why that can’t be the case.”

Edouard’s record actually becomes all the more impressive when you consider that he has scored 13 league goals despite only starting 16 games in the Scottish Premiership, with a further nine appearances coming from the bench.

And with five goals coming across the various rounds in the Europa League, there has been every indication that Edouard will go on to repay the club-record fee that Celtic spent in the summer.

And while Dembele boasted a much better record in the cup competitions, Edouard is already just five goals away from eclipsing his countryman’s league tally for the Bhoys. So perhaps, with eight games remaining, he will be able to mark that achievement before this season concludes.
