Last Friday, Ibrahima Konate to Liverpool looked like a sure thing.
After all, there was plenty of speculation about Liverpool signing the Red Bull Leipzig defender.
And once Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano gave the immortal ‘Here we go’ it was assumed that the Reds had got their man.
But there still might be a bit of work for Liverpool to do yet.
According to The Telegraph, the Anfield club will have to pay £40 million to sign the 21-year-old French powerhouse.
That is almost £10 million more than what The Guardian reported the fee to be last week.
Ordinarily, £10 million wouldn’t be a huge figure for Liverpool, a club worth billions, but BBC Sport reported on Tuesday that the Merseyside giants had recorded a pre-tax loss of £46 million.
That will undoubtedly have a knock-on effect in terms of their transfer budget.
Here’s how some Liverpool fans reacted to the new Konate report on Twitter:
It’s important that Liverpool get this deal done, all the same.
Owner John Henry and Fenway Sports Group are coming under intense scrutiny for their efforts to quit UEFA in favour of a new European Super League, which has since been suspended.
The American businessman issued a public apology to irate Liverpool supporters seven days ago.
But actions speak much louder than words and Henry will know that his popularity will fall even further if he and FSG don’t wind up signing Konate, after Romano’s revelation about ‘Here we go’.
