Ian Wright has slammed some for suggesting that Liverpool were even out of the Premier League’s top-four race as they beat Manchester City 1-0 on Sunday.

The legendary striker thinks those suggestions are ‘silly’ and he debunked those claims that Jurgen Klopp has to ‘build’ again on Merseyside, as they showcased their old selves at Anfield.

It was a big, big game for the Reds because they went into the match already 13 points behind the current champions, never mind further behind the current leaders, Arsenal.

From that perspective, it would have been one hell of a mountain to climb and, never mind this being a test of quality, but it also would have tested them from a mental aspect too.

But, it just turned out to be a game that was much-needed for the six-time European champions because they went toe-to-toe with Man City and Mo Salah inspired them to all three points.

Nonetheless, Wright shared his thoughts on the Reds, their title chances and what has recently been said about the club, as he told Premier League Productions (17/10/22 at 2:10 pm).

“People writing off Liverpool and saying ‘the title is out of it’,” said Wright. “Maybe that is the case, but there’s no way that Liverpool aren’t going to do something.

“They have too many good players. The manager is brilliant. I think that’s a significant win for them.

“It has to be for Liverpool (top four their aim despite win over Man City). It has to be. I still look at it now, and see the way Liverpool performed in that game, they can get on a run.

“You can’t see Liverpool not being in the top four. I thought it was silly for people saying ‘oh, people are out of it now. He’s going to have to build and transition’.

“Well, we saw what they could do to Man City there. A very good Man City side.”

DON’T RULE OUT LIVERPOOL

Come May, those at the Etihad will still be preparing for another possible Premier League title celebration, but don’t rule out Liverpool.

The awards aren’t handed out in October, and whilst Arsenal and Spurs have made remarkable starts, they aren’t proven over a whole season.

That bit of quality, know-how, experience and knack of going right until the end might just fall in the favour of Klopp’s side.

Their only problem is that they have slipped up enough and they can’t do so anymore.
