Everton have seen Gylfi Sigurdsson step up again in recent weeks.

Everton Sporting Director Marcel Brands looks on during the Premier League match between Everton FC and Leicester City at Goodison Park on January 1, 2019 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Everton are still chasing a Europa League spot after Sunday’s 4-0 win over Manchester United, making it five wins in eight games and six clean sheets in that run.

The Toffees have enjoyed a decent run under Marco Silva, but major changes may still come this summer as Marcel Brands attempts to continue his rebuilding project.

A number of players are expected to go, and The Sun recently reported that a host of ageing, high-earning players are poised to leave Goodison Park as Brands wants to reduce the average age of the squad.

Maarten Stekelenburg, Phil Jagielka, Morgan Schneiderlin and Theo Walcott are all expected to go, clearing money from the wage bill – but one veteran player surely won’t be sold.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is a high earner, and at 29, some may have been tempted to cash in. His value will almost certainly go down from here, and his mid-season form left many underwhelmed.

However, the Icelandic playmaker has impressed of late. Sigurdsson now has four goals and two assists in his last 10 appearances for Everton, taking his season tally to 13 goals and five assists.

A big money signing by Steve Walsh, Sigurdsson is one of the most talented players in the Everton squad, and whilst some may have wanted to cash in and reinvest in a younger option, the Toffees should instead be keeping Sigurdsson in a key role next season.

Brands appears set to clear out a host of players around 30, but Sigurdsson has surely made himself impossible to sell this summer, having previously been somewhat in danger.
