The Everton summer signing is starting to show signs of his quality.
Sam Allardyce will doubtless have been delighted to have overseen a victory in his first game in charge of Everton as his new club prevailed past Huddersfield Town with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park.
Allardyce will have been especially pleased to have seen Gylfi Sigurdsson, who has struggled to perform consistently since his summer switch from Swansea City, perform impressively and get on the scoresheet.
On several occasions this season Sigurdsson’s overall impact on games has been very limited, but the 28-year-old impressed against Swansea as he played some slick passes.
Allardyce is now in the process of deciding which members of Everton’s existing squad are worth persisting with and against Huddersfield Sigurdsson provided a compelling case to suggest that he could still turn out to be a successful signing.
All the while, uncertainty persists regarding the future of another creative midfielder, Ross Barkley, who is closing in on a return from injury having not yet played this season.
Barkley’s contract expires at the end of June and, while Allardyce has revealed that he wants to keep the 23-year-old, as reported by Sky Sports, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was to depart.
In normal circumstances losing a player of Barkley’s talent would be a significant setback for Everton but the blow would be softened considerably if Sigurdsson is able to consistently impress.
