It looks like Celtic are plotting to give Leigh Griffiths a new deal.
Leigh Griffiths has told The Glasgow Evening Times that the process of signing a new contract with Celtic is ‘almost completed’.
The 28-year-old’s contract is due to expire in 2021, but it looks like the Hoops are about to change that.
He told The Glasgow Evening Times: “It is still ongoing. These things are never easy.
“It is almost completed now and hopefully in the next couple of weeks it will be done and dusted. Hopefully it is a nice long contract.”
If and when it happens, it’ll be a very smart move by Celtic.
This is a player who has scored 100 goals for the Parkhead club and considering his last extension came in December of 2015, you could argue that it’s overdue.
The Bhoys have just lost Moussa Dembele, meaning that it’s imperative for Brendan Rodgers to keep his remaining strikers – Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard – happy.
The Scot hadn’t played as much Dembele over the past two years, and Edouard’s arrival on loan last term consigned him to being Rodgers’s third-choice striker for much of the season.
But this is Celtic’s chance to remind Griffiths – on £18,000 per week in Glasgow at the moment [The Daily Star] – that he’s still a big player for them.
Griffiths is a 40-goal-a-season striker, as he demonstrated during the 2015-16 campaign, so if Celtic keep him happy then it’s a move that suits everyone affiliated with the club.
