Signing the Swansea City-owned marksman could be bad news for Leeds United’s Kemar Roofe

Kemar Roofe of Leeds and Kevin Long of Burnley in action during the Carabao Cup Third Round match between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor on September 19, 2017 in Burnley, England.

A report in the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (p60) claimed that Oli McBurnie was a striker who Leeds United wanted to sign this summer.

The on-loan Swansea City hitman is on fire in the Championship with Barnsley and has netted six goals in nine appearances for the Tykes.

Not only was the 21-year-old born in Leeds, but the Whites’ head coach Paul Heckingbottom was the man who brought him to Oakwell in January and a reunion could be on the cards this summer.

If it is, would that be a bad sign for Kemar Roofe’s future in West Yorkshire?

Kemar Roofe of Leeds United holds off Stefan Johansen of Fulham during the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Leeds United at Craven Cottage on March 7, 2017 in London, England.

The 25-year-old has had nearly two full seasons at Leeds but has struggled to justify the £3 million that was spent on him, netting 12 goals in 78 Championship appearances.

Roofe has been given more chances in a striking role this season and despite scoring two hat-tricks – against Newport and QPR – he is not a regular goalscorer and United should consider offloading him to fund a move for McBurnie if Swansea make him available.

Even if they can’t sign Pierre-Michel Lasogga on a permanent basis, Leeds will need someone better than Roofe – who has nine goals in 30 league games this season as a striker – to fire them into the Premier League next term and McBurnie is a good shout.
