Signing Sebastien Haller in the January transfer window has to be considered a risk for Newcastle United.

The Shields Gazette suggest that Newcastle have made Haller their top target, with the striker netting six goals in nine matches in the Bundesliga.

Newcastle are expected to be given funds to spend in January, with Mike Ashley prepared to invest in a bid to save his side.

But going after Haller is hardly a guaranteed route to success this season.

Newcastle undoubtedly need goals and Haller has been one of the most in-form strikers across Europe this term.

But the Frankfurt forward has no Premier League experience, and there is no certainty that his goalscoring form would translate across to English football.

Yoshinori Muto was in flying form in Germany, but he has hardly looked up to scratch since moving to the Premier League.

And Newcastle may be better off spending their limited funds on a player with a track record of impressing in England over Haller, who would be a big gamble, given the perilous situation that they are currently in.
